Natural Playground Master Plan

The King Observation Lab Teaching School (KOLTS) is a stand-alone demonstration childcare facility at Seneca College’s King Campus north of Toronto. King Campus, located in the rolling hills of the Oak Ridges Moraine, is a rural campus situated on 282 hectares of woodlands, fields, lakes and wetlands. KOLTS provides high quality early childhood education for children ranging from 6 months to 12 years of age in the community and is a valuable resource for students, educators and researchers of early childhood education.

Following the removal from the existing playground of a large climbing structure that had failed CSA safety guidelines, school administration and the KOLTS parent committee together with earthartist Planning and Design embarked upon a playground revitalization process to create an outdoor play environment that would actively engage children, physically, intellectually and creatively. The master Plan envisioned facilities that would include all aspects of high quality play; gross motor play, fine motor activities, the stimulation of the senses, and areas to explore emotional, creative and social interaction.
