Havergal College is a leading university-preparatory day and boarding school for girls in Toronto, Canada. For over 100 years, Havergal has provided young women with an exceptional education in an environment that encourages both inquiry and curiosity.
The Junior School Playground backs onto a beautiful 22-acre campus featuring a protected tree-lined ravine teeming with wonders of the natural world. It is the best possible environment in which to teach young women about the inter-relationships between their natural world and their own immediate world. This “learning playscape” introduces a wide range of physical elements, vegetation and topography that act as catalysts for children’s play and provide an opportunity for students think flexibly, take risks with ideas (or interactions), and allow creative thoughts to flow. Students discover that learning is exciting and full of possibilities.
Mike’s efforts have been paramount in bringing our vision to the broader school community and generating support required to bring this innovative project to fruition. There is no doubt that our new outdoor learning playscape will be a tremendous success and a huge asset to not only members of the Havergal community, but will benefit the City of Toronto for many future generations because of Mike’s involvement, commitment and passion for this project. I have no hesitation in recommending Earthartist and welcome the opportunity to elaborate further if required. –Leslie Anne Dexter, Head of the Junior School
The future will belong to the nature-smart – those individuals, families, businesses, and political leaders who develop a deeper understanding of the transformative power of the natural world and who balance the virtual with the real. The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need.” Richard Louv – Author, Last Child in the Woods
