Junior School Natural Playground
This was an ambitious playground project integrated playground design with environmental restoration. Central to the vision of the playscape was the “daylighting” of Burke Brook and the integration of the restored landscape into the K-6 playground. Truly a learning landscape, the design promoted the values of stewardship of Havergal College and helped foster a sense of interconnectedness with the environment.
The remarkable natural environment of the school topography provided an exceptional opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind teaching and learning playscape that enabled each student to develop her full intellectual, creative, and physical potential.
- Key Challenge: A complex natural restoration which required a multidisciplinary team to navigate both the approval process for works in-stream
- Best Feature: The grading and naturalization plan allowed us to create plateaus such as the labyrinth play area which included a sundial feature
