Natural Playground Featuring a Real Stone Tower
This playground is one of the first examples of the artistic direction that I’m moving towards in my practice; the creation of playable art and more abstract playable landscapes. The site integrates the Spiral Mountain concept (from hero’s journey) with a wooden climbing structure.
The unprogrammed features provide numerous ways for children to create their own play and interact with the space. The wooden climbing structure provides a diverse range of challenge to provide a scalable and challenging play opportunity for all ages and abilities.
Key challenge: integrating a wide variety of play opportunities in a relatively small space and limited budget.
Best feature: this playscape was developed to provide a high level interpretation of indigenous and colonial archetypes. The stone tower was built in collaboration with the Willow Bank School of restoration located adjacent to the playground. He shouted to the students of Willow Bank who did a great job!
